Day by day

  1. Day 1 - Start

    Ulaanbaatar

We start easy. A late-morning departure from UB and a short first drive, so you're not stuck in a car for ten hours on day one with jet lag still in your head.

    Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
  2. Day 1 · 1 night

    Baga Gazriin Chuluu

Granite hills and a soft landing into the trip. Short walk to the old monastery ruins. A good place to learn how ger camp life works before the long Gobi days.

    Baga Gazriin Chuluu, Mongolia
  3. Day 2 · 1 night

    Tsagaan Suvraga (White Stupa)

The white seabed cliffs. We go at our own pace here, no rush to the next thing. If you want a slow morning with coffee and the view, that's the whole point of this trip.

    Tsagaan Suvraga (White Stupa), Mongolia
  4. Day 3 · 1 night

    Yolyn Am (Eagle Valley)

The ice canyon. An easy walk in, as far as you feel like going. Solo travellers tend to like this one. It's quiet and you can wander.

    Yolyn Am (Eagle Valley), Mongolia
  5. Days 4-5 · 2 nights

    Khongoryn Els (Singing Dunes)

Two nights, and the second day is a proper rest day. Climb the dunes or don't. Read, nap, ride a camel, watch the light. After a few days on Gobi roads your back will thank you.

    Khongoryn Els (Singing Dunes), Mongolia
  6. Day 6 · 1 night

    Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs)

The Flaming Cliffs at sunset. We keep the driving short today so there's time to actually sit at the edge and take it in.

    Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs), Mongolia
  7. Day 7 · 1 night

    Ongi Monastery

A calm river camp at the old monastery. A nice halfway point on the way back north. Early night if you want it.

    Ongi Monastery, Mongolia
  8. Day 8 · 1 night

    Kharkhorin / Erdene Zuu

The old capital and Erdene Zuu monastery, a bit of history to round things off. Day 9 is the easy paved drive back to UB.

    Kharkhorin / Erdene Zuu, Mongolia
