How much does a private Mongolia tour cost?

A private tour in Mongolia is priced by the day for the whole trip, not per person, because you are chartering a vehicle, driver, guide, and full support for each day on the road. It runs from around $300 to $320 per person per day on shorter trips, less per day on longer journeys where those fixed costs spread further, with all land costs included, and rises with the remoteness of the route, the season, and the standard of accommodation. Recent private trips for two have run roughly $2,350 per person for a 7-day Gobi loop up to $2,950-3,150 per person for an 11-12 day journey, excluding international flights.

What you're actually paying for

A private tour in Mongolia is priced by the day, not by the head. You are chartering a whole small operation - a 4WD vehicle, an experienced driver, an English-speaking guide, fuel across long distances, all your meals on the road, park fees, and the ger camps or lodges you sleep in each night. The core cost of running that day on the steppe is much the same whether two of you travel or four, so the more people share it, the less each one pays. A couple splits it two ways, four split it further, and a solo traveller carries the whole day alone, which is why solo is the most expensive way to go per person.

As a rough guide, a private trip runs from around $300 to $320 per person per day on shorter trips, and less per day on longer journeys where those fixed costs spread further. All land costs are included in that.

What moves the price

The two things that move a quote most are how remote the route is and the standard of where you sleep.

A comfortable, en-suite tourist-class ger camp is a different cost from one of the handful of design-led desert lodges, which can run $300 a night or more on their own. Most of my trips use a deliberate mix - a couple of standout places where it genuinely lifts the journey, and comfortable, well-run camps everywhere else. That keeps the trip honest to its budget without pretending every night needs to be luxury.

Season matters too. The peak months of July and August, around Naadam and the best Gobi light, sit at the higher end; the shoulder weeks are gentler on price. And the further you go from the paved corridors - the deep Gobi, the Altai west, the Khövsgöl north - the more fuel and days the route simply requires.

What a real trip costs

To make the floor concrete, here is the shape of recent private trips for two travellers, land costs only, international flights excluded:

  • A 7-day Gobi and Karakorum overland loop - the classic route, comfortable camps - lands around $2,300 to $2,400 per person.
  • An 8-day version at a relaxed pace, with a rest day and a camel ride built in, is around $2,700 per person.
  • An 11- to 12-day steppe-to-Gobi journey, with a night or two at a higher standard and more time to slow down, runs roughly $2,950 to $3,150 per person.

These are real figures from real itineraries, not headline prices. Your own quote depends on your dates, your pace, and the standard you want - which is exactly why I price each trip individually rather than selling a fixed package.

What's included, and what isn't

A private quote covers the vehicle and driver, your guide, all accommodation, meals outside Ulaanbaatar, park and site fees, and airport transfers. It does not include international flights, travel insurance, your hotel nights in Ulaanbaatar, or meals in the city - those stay separate so you can see exactly where the money goes.

Is private worth it over a group tour?

Honestly, not always. If your priority is the lowest possible price or the social side of travelling with a group, a scheduled group departure will cost you less and Nomada is not the right fit - I will tell you so and point you to someone who runs them. But if you want the route built around you, the freedom to stop where the light is good, and a pace set by you rather than a timetable, a private trip is worth what it costs. That is the only kind of trip I run. If you're still weighing it up, I go deeper in my honest private vs group comparison.
